What are “phishing” e-mail scams and how can I protect myself? A phishing scam is when an e-mail sent to a consumer looks as if it was sent from a real company that the consumer may have purchased products or services from – but in reality, it comes from someone else. Often the e-mail address appears to be from a legitimate company and the company’s branding or logo may be on the e-mail. The e-mail usually states that the consumer must click a link to go to a site to do something. Upon clicking on the link, the consumer is presented with a site that looks like a genuine site and is asked to enter their name, address, password, credit card information, or other personal information. You can protect yourself against phishing scams by ensuring the site you are visiting is the true site owned by the company.
